What is a composite filling?

We often hear the question: what is a composite filling? And, how is it different from my other fillings?

If you have ever had a cavity, there are several types of material that dentists use for fillings, including composite. In recent years, composite fillings are more frequently requested than amalgam, gold and silver. But what is it about composite that makes them so popular?

Why do people need fillings?

Most people need fillings at some point in their lives. They are used to repair teeth with cavities. To remove cavities and decay, your Dr. Frahm takes out the decayed portion of your tooth. Then, she fills your tooth to restore its function and structure. Fillings support the structural integrity of your tooth and keep your smile intact. They also prevent further tooth decay and gum erosion while improving your oral health.

Composite fillings have many benefits

All the materials available for fillings will maintain your tooth health. But composite is one of the only materials that can be closely matched to the color of your existing teeth. It is also non-toxic, making it a biologically compatible material with low risk of failure.

  • Aesthetics
Composite provides a natural appearance which closely resembles your tooth enamel. Composite can be tinted to the exact shade of your existing teeth. This makes them well-suited for use in front teeth and other visible teeth.
  • Less time at the dentist
The placement of a composite filling can usually be completed in one visit. Compared to amalgam, composite fillings require less tooth structure to be removed to prepare the tooth for the filling.

What are composite fillings made of?

Composite fillings are made of a mixture of liquid acrylic resin reinforced with finely ground ceramic. Composite is a non-toxic material that naturally bonds to your tooth structure. This means composite fillings are powerfully strong, very durable, and they are more resistant to breaking or fracturing.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Composite fillings?

The truth is, compared to some of the other materials used in fillings, composite fillings can be more expensive. But because of their aesthetic appeal, biocompatibility, and low rate of failure, composite continues to be a popular option for all of us who need fillings. Unfortunately, many dental insurance plans don’t cover the entire cost of composite fillings. But most benefits plans cover a portion of your care. Always check with your insurance company when in doubt.
