5 ways to prepare for major dental work

Here are 5 ways to help you prepare for dental work and guide you through the care process.

If you’re planning on an oral surgery or cosmetic dentistry procedure this year, it is a good idea to prepare and plan. This puts your mind at ease and helps your body recover more quickly.

1. Ask your dentist what to expect

Information is power, so the saying goes. Knowing exactly what to expect from your upcoming procedure enables you to prepare both mentally and physically. Before undertaking any work, Dr. Frahm will explain the procedure in full. She includes information about the benefits, any risks, and what medicines you’ll want on hand afterward. This helps you prepare, plan and recover from dental treatment.

2. Sedation considerations

If you feel anxious about your dental procedure, sedation dentistry is a well-tested, effective way to reduce discomfort and pain. It has the added benefit of allowing your dentist to complete treatments in less time, while reducing any stress you experience. Talk with Dr. Frahm about sedation care to find out if this is a good option for you. One thing to note: because the effects of oral conscious sedation can last a long time, you should arrange to have someone accompany you to and from your appointment.

3. Food considerations before and after

If you’ve ever had any kind of surgical procedure, you know that some anesthesia requires fasting beforehand. We’ll let you know what to expect and how to prepare properly before your visit. Food considerations also need to be taken into account after your visit. Some dental treatments can leave your mouth tender and sore. For example, if you’re having a tooth extracted or a root canal, prepare in advance by stocking up on soft foods such as smoothies, ice cream, eggs, soup, hummus and mashed potatoes. 4. Help. When you really need somebody

Surgeries and long dental procedures require adequate time and rest to heal. Dr. Frahm will clarify what to expect and what measures to take to ensure a speedy recovery. Above all, you’ll want to take it easy when you get home. Skip the household chores and make sure you have food you can eat in the house. If possible, arrange to have a loved one take care and check in on you. Dr. Frahm will call in the evening or follow day to check in on you and monitor your recovery.

5. Follow up appointments

For certain dental procedures, Dr. Frahm may request that you come in for one or more follow-up appointments. We’ll make arrangements with you in advance to get those follow-ups scheduled.
