Do Veneers Hurt?

Veneers are a popular way to achieve a radiant smile. But you might wonder: do veneers hurt? It’s a common misconception when people hear how teeth are prepared for veneers. Generally, getting veneers does not hurt. It may take you some time to adapt to your new teeth and how they fit together. You probably won’t mind the adjustment a bit because you’ll be smiling from ear-to-ear.

Preparing your teeth for porcelain and composite veneers

There are three types of veneers from which to choose: porcelain, composite and ultra-thin. Whatever type of veneer you opt for you should expect to visit Dr. Frahm at least twice.

For your first appointment, Dr. Frahm prepares your teeth for the veneers. Advance preparation ensures that veneers sit flush in your mouth and don’t cause bite alignment issues. This brings the beautiful, natural look that most people love about veneers. This tooth preparation for composite and porcelain veneers entails the removal of a thin layer of enamel from your teeth.

Although enamel removal sounds painful, the amount of enamel removed is only about the thickness of your fingernail. This means the tooth nerves are never disturbed. Because dental visits cause anxiety for some, you’re given a local anesthetic and can choose nitrous oxide to enhance relaxation. And, Dr. Frahm offers sedation care for those who experience high levels of stress.

For people with highly sensitive teeth and gums, the sensation of the procedure may bring some discomfort, but nothing more.

Once your teeth have are prepared, Dr. Frahm fits you with temporary veneers. Once your permanent veneers are custom crafted, you return to our office for a second visit and Dr. Frahm places your new veneers.

Veneer bonding

To place your permanent veneers, Dr. Frahm uses a special light to bond them to your teeth and ensure they are firmly attached. Some people with sensitive teeth may experience what’s called “veneer bonding sensitivity” at this time. The feeling is akin to the sensation you get when biting into something cold. For most people, Tylenol is recommended to reduce any discomfort.

Ultra-thin Lumineer veneers

The third type of veneers are ultra-thin Lumineer veneers. True to their name, these veneers are so thin that they can be applied directly on top of your teeth with no preparation or enamel removal required. This makes these veneers very popular for those looking to enhance the color and shape of teeth for a truly beautiful smile.
