Gum Contouring: What to Expect

If you’re considering gum contouring to beautify your smile, what can you expect during and after the procedure? Read on to find out.

Why would you want gum contouring?

Gum contouring is a cosmetic dental procedure that removes excess gum tissue. Many people choose gum contouring for a more symmetrical smile. Also known as gum reshaping, tissue sculpting, or gingival contouring, it can be performed for either cosmetic or medical reasons.

If your teeth look “too small” or your smile is “too gummy,” gum contouring can help you have a more attractive smile. Gum contouring is also used as a treatment option for periodontal disease. Removing excess gum tissue can help resolve periodontal disease and reduce your risk for reinfection.

What to expect during gum contouring

Before your gum contouring procedure, Dr. Frahm performs a dental exam. Together, you discuss your treatment goals. Then, you decide on a gum treatment plan.

If you are prone to anxiety or would just like to be more comfortable during your treatment, not to worry! Dr. Frahm can offer the option of sedation dentistry to make sure you are as comfortable as possible.

During the treatment itself, Dr. Frahm will give you a local anesthesia to numb the area.

After determining your gum-to-tooth ratio, Dr. Frahm will gently remove and sculpt your gum tissue using a soft tissue laser. This special laser ensures precision and faster healing time.

Depending on your tooth anatomy, a very small amount of bone around each tooth might be removed. Without this step, your gums may grow back to where they were before the procedure.

The gum contouring procedure itself takes less than an hour. And with proper care, your new gum line will last for years.

What can you expect after gum contouring treatment?

After your gum contouring visit, you can expect mild tenderness. This is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You can also reduce pain by applying an ice pack or cold compress to your mouth for a couple of days afterwards.

Finally, you’ll want to stick to soft foods and be gentle with brushing for a few days. Most patients resume normal routines quickly.
