The Different Types of Veneers: Porcelain vs. Composite

When it comes to transforming your smile, porcelain and composite veneers are a smart choice. For symmetrical, beautiful smiles that cover imperfections and discolorations, veneers are a less invasive cosmetic dental option than crowns.

What are veneers?

Veneers are a thin layer of either porcelain or composite material that permanently bonds to the front surface of your tooth. There are two primary types of veneers:

  1. Porcelain veneers are the most widely requested type of veneer in cosmetic dentistry today. People with significant tooth damage or crooked teeth find that porcelain veneers most closely resemble the beauty of a natural smile. Additionally, porcelain is a biocompatible material that naturally adheres to your DNA to form an actual bond with your body. Porcelain doesn’t produce any harmful side effects and is completely non-toxic.

  2. Composite veneers are a more cost-effective solution for those who want to cover up aesthetic problems. They are made of resin that is matched to the exact color of your teeth. Although composite is less expensive than other options, they come with a few downsides. Composite veneers are more prone to staining and chipping.

Aesthetic differences between porcelain and composite veneers

Both porcelain and composite veneers restore brilliant and consistent color for a beautiful smile. However, there are a few aesthetic differences between the two materials.

Porcelain veneers are widely regarded as the gold standard for beautiful, natural-looking smiles. They possess a translucent quality that more closely matches natural tooth enamel. Porcelain reflects light in a way that creates a natural appearance.

Composite veneers also offer excellent aesthetic improvements. Composite veneers are made of resin and matched to your exact tooth color. That said, composite material may not achieve the same depth and translucency as porcelain.

Durability and cost of dental veneers

Both porcelain and composite veneers are long lasting and durable. Each is a worthwhile investment when crafting a dazzling smile.

The nature of porcelain gives this material an advantage over composite. Because porcelain naturally adheres to your body’s DNA, it forms an incredibly strong natural bond that’s long-lasting. When properly cared for, porcelain veneers can last 10 to 20 years. Porcelain is also highly resistant to staining and chipping, making this a worthwhile investment.

In comparison, composite veneers, while still durable, only last between five to seven years. They are more susceptible to chipping and staining, which may require more frequent repairs or replacements. However, composite veneers have a clear advantage when it comes to cost efficiency. They are generally more affordable than porcelain veneers, making them an attractive option for those on a budget.
